For our final assignment, I decided to create a typology centered around benches. While out shooting for another project, I stumbled upon a series of benches overlooking the coulees. The contrast between the benches and the view got me thinking about their purpose and significance. After some reflection, I realized that benches serve two main purposes: for comfort and for beauty. I wanted to capture this duality in my photos and explore the idea of slowing down to appreciate the view.
As I was composing my shots, I noticed that many of the benches had memorial plates on them, adding another layer of meaning to each photograph. Benches not only provide a place to rest, but also serve as a way to remember and appreciate time spent in a particular place.
To symbolize the passage of time, I decided to capture the benches at different times of day, resulting in varying levels of light and darkness in each photo. The arrangement of the photos goes from lightest to darkest in contrast, highlighting the different moods and emotions evoked by each image.
While my photos are serious in nature, I wanted to inject a bit of humor into the presentation. I arranged the photos in the style of a bench, creating a playful and unconventional display. During my presentation, the class had mixed opinions about this arrangement, but I enjoyed the opportunity to bring a bit of levity to the project.
In conclusion, benches serve a multitude of purposes and meanings, from providing a place of comfort and rest to serving as a symbol of remembrance and appreciation. Through my typology, I aimed to capture the different emotions and moods evoked by these humble yet significant objects. I hope my photos encourage viewers to slow down, take a seat, and appreciate the beauty of their surroundings.
