Exposure Latitude + Depth of Field Take #2

I decided to re-attempt the 3rd assignment and improve with what I learned from exposing my first roll of film. I was much more intentional with my shots and focused on going through a mental checklist before each shot. This second shoot was much smoother and felt a lot better. I went out at around the same time of day as my last shoot and played around with where to set up my scene to better use the shadows for the picture.

The following is the sequence I used for the first range of shots:

-5 = (1/2000) + (F22)

-4 = (1/1000) + (F22)

-3 = (1/500) + (F22)

-2 = (1/250) + (F22)

-1 = (1/250) + (F16)

0 = (1/125) + (F16)

+1 = (1/60) + (F16)

+2 = (1/60) + (F11)

+3 = (1/60) + (F8)

+4 = (1/60) + (F5.6)

+5 = (1/30) + (F5.6)

Here is the resulting image:

The first shot in the upper frame was one I took walking from class back to my car in the middle of the night. I shot a very bright streetlight that had a tree growing around it. I really enjoyed how the streetlight was making the tree glow in a unique way. I wish that the film developed the entire way but I think if I crop it properly with the easel I can get a workable photo.

A also struggled with the tripod in the next sequence of shots with the wind. I kept having to readjust everything and reflux the camera as it kept toppling over.

This series of shots for the Exposure latitude assignment came out a lot better. I accidentally did not leave enough room for the final overexposed shot in the sequence so I decided to try it again and this time I was able to get both sides done and with a good amount of focus. I chose to print #14 because I liked the contrast in the picture but #13 is the proper exposure of the assignment so I will print that one instead.

The final two shots are for the depth of field part of the assignment. I wanted to shoot a mixture of suburban and nature. I really like the trees out behind my house so I decided to attempt the depth of field assignment. I was able to get really great depth of field. I was also able to match the exposure on both shots.

Here is the sequence between the two shots:

I started with this first shot

(F22) + (1/60)

Then I went and switched the aperture and the shutter speed in the second shot

(F3.5) + (1/2000)

The issue that was pointed out to me in these two shots is that the focus is also the same in both shots. For the next two I need to make sure I refocus on either something in the background or something in the foreground to show the blur between the two images. Another issue is that there is two much tonal grey in the photos. I think that I will try and lower the contrast on the enlarger next time and see if I can improve the shots.
